In English Professional Football. Can the Penalty Taker stop just before hittig ball?

motman asked:

When a Penalty is taken in an English professional football match, I always thought that the player taking the Penalty could not stop in his run-up, until he actually struck the ball.
Am I correct?

    You cant fake the shot.

You can stagger the run up but you can’t pretend to shoot to see which way the keeper goes. You must hit the ball in one swing.

Yes it is perfectly legal, it is one good way to trick a goalkeeper.

Yeah they can, Ronaldo did it in the CL final against Chelsea and missed, I think he just bottled it though.

I think the same goes for EPL matches as well..

No, and referees that allow them to are wrong.

The law for taking penalties is the same all over the world. You are not allowed a ‘full-stop’ before contacting the ball. However, introduced in Brazil many years ago, the ‘stutter run-up’ has taken hold in all countries where South American influence is evident.

I rarely agree with Sepp Blatter, but I am with him on this one when he says if it was up to him, he would ban the ‘stutter-step’ action, but it is a decision that has to be taken by a committee as a whole and so far, like goal-line technology and other proposals, is very much in limbo.

I think a goalkeeper’s job at a penalty is hard enough (providing the kicker is up to the task) without having to second guess over the period of a mere fraction of a second.

yid he did not bottle it it just so happened that Chelsea had hired someone to analyse the united penalty kickers. From the information that they were given if Ronaldo did the stuttered run up he put it at a certain height one way. He would put it the other way if he did a normal run up. Also he did an evaluation on van Der Sar at penalties. Anelka was the one that really bottled it in that shootout.
