What is the history of Indirect Free Kick?

Semplicemente Dragon ball z asked:

I am an Italian football referee, and I always wondered when (and why) the difference between direct and indirect free kicks showed up.
What is the history of such a restart of play, and why was it created? Wasn’t only one kind of free kick (the direct one) enough?

It is actually the other way around. The original free kick was the IFK. It was adopted into the game in 1877. Later, for more serious fouls, the DFK was added to differentiate between the violence and injures caused by the more serious fouls.
